California Legislature approves $15 minimum wage increase, will be highest in the US

California wage raise increase, $15 minimum wage

California lawmakers approved a sweeping plan on Thursday raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour over the next six years. This will be the nation’s highest statewide minimum wage and it will take effect by 2022.

The Assembly passed SB3 with a 48-26 vote. The the Senate voted 26-12, people cheered the move and "Si se puede" can be heard from the gallery above. The legislation now goes to Gov. Jerry Brown, who is expected to sign it into law after previously working out the plan with labor unions. Brown will sign the wage hike into law in Los Angeles on Monday.

Democrats who control both legislative chambers in California praised the move as a boon to more than 2 million of state’s poorest workers. Opponents complained it was rushed and did not include a wide group at the negotiating table. Business owners and economists fears that the yearly increases will be tied to inflation and will make California hostile to business.

The state of New York was considering a similar move.

Under the plan, California's hourly minimum wage would increase from the current $10 to $10.50 on January 1. Businesses with 25 or fewer employees would be given an extra year to comply. Increases of $1 an hour would come every January until 2022. The governor could delay increases in times of budgetary or economic downturns.

California’s current $10 an hour minimum is tied with Massachusetts for the highest among states. Los Angeles, Seattle and other cities have recently approved $15 minimum wages, while Oregon officials plan to increase the minimum to $14.75 an hour in cities and $12.50 in rural areas by 2022.

In New York, Gov. Cuomo and state lawmakers continued to negotiate Thursday over Cuomo’s proposal to gradually raise the state’s minimum wage from $9 to $15 by the end of 2018 in New York City and by mid-2021 elsewhere in the state.

Donate Cars in MA

Donate Car for Tax Credit

GUIDE TO CAR DONATION TAX DEDUCTION

The donation of a car or other vehicle to charity is a significant charitable contribution, perhaps the largest many people will give in their lifetimes. Whether the primary motivation to donate is convenience or altruism, donors want to ensure that they receive the maximum tax deduction allowable.

Step 1: Choose an eligible organization

The most important consideration when choosing a charity is determining its “exempt” status. To be eligible for a tax deduction, the car must be donated to a tax-exempt nonprofit organization, most commonly a 501(c) (3) organization created for religious, charitable, educational, scientific or literary purposes or for prevention of cruelty to children or animals. Religious organizations such as churches, synagogues and mosques automatically qualify
even without filing for 501(c) (3) status. To verify if an organization is tax-exempt, use the IRS
Exempt Organizations Select Check, call the IRS at (877) 829-5500, or ask to see the organization’s IRS letter recognizing it as tax-exempt

Step 2: Itemize deductions

For a car donation to be eligible for a tax deduction, the donation must be made solely for charitable or public purposes and the donor must itemize deductions (such as medical expenses and charitable donations) on Schedule A of IRS Form 1040. Those taking the standard deduction rather than itemizing will not receive a deduction for their donation. Generally, it is worth the effort to itemize
if the total of the itemized deductions for that tax year is more than the standard deduction one is entitled to. Quick tip: Whether itemizing deductions is worthwhile for you depends on the specifics of your situation. H&R Block offers a more detailed guide to itemizing versus taking the standard deduction. Always speak to your accountant or tax advisor for advice specific to your circumstance.

Step 3: Determine the amount of your deduction

The exact amount of your deduction is dependent on what the charity does with your vehicle and on the vehicle’s value. Let’s break it down. Now, for an important definition: what is the “fair market value” of the car? Fair market value is defined as “the price at which the property would change hands between a willing buyer and a willing seller, neither being compelled to buy or sell, and both having reasonable knowledge of all the necessary facts.” In other words, the price you could peasonably expect to get for the vehicle on the open market. This is not necessarily identical to the “blue book” value of thecar, as factors such as engine or body trouble or excessive wear could decrease the vehicle’s value and significant improvements might increase the value. Quick tip: You can use a vehicle pricing guide such as this one from Kelley Blue Book to determine your car’s
value based on its current condition.

Step 4: Gather necessary documentation

The documentation you’ll need to claim your deduction is dependent on the amount of the deduction.
≤$500
For a deduction of $500 or less, the IRS requires:
- the name of the charity
- a description of the donated vehicle
- a statement if goods and services were received, and their value.

$500-$5,000
For a deduction of more than $500 and less than $5,000,the IRS requires:
- the name of the charity
- a description of the donated vehicle
- a statement if goods and services were received, and their value
- Copy B of Form 1098-C OR a legal substitute
- If you are e-filing, Form 8453

>$5,000
For a deduction of more than $5,000, the IRS requires:
-IRS Form 8283
-Form 1098-C or legal substitute (such as the receipt from the charity)
-a written appraisal of the vehicle’s value.
The appraisal must be from a qualified appraiser and must be completed no more than 60 days before the donation. The cost of the appraisal cannot be deducted as a charitable expense, but it can be
itemized in miscellaneous expenses If you are claiming the fair market value of a vehicle that will be used by the charity for its own purposes or the charity will be making material improvements to the vehicle, the IRS also requires written acknowledgment from the charity describing how the vehicle will be used or improved and certifying that it will not be sold before said use or improvement. The IRS Guide to Vehicle Donations for Donors explains this in more detail.

Step 5: File tax return!

The tax deduction can be claimed in the year that the donation was given. Don’t forget to include all the necessary documentation, as outlined above, with your federal income tax return. Whether your car donation qualifies for a deduction on your state income tax return varies on a state-by-state basis. Check with your state tax department. Note: The tax benefit you receive for donating your car is
a deduction, not a tax credit. This means that the amount of income that the government will tax you on is reduced by the deduction amount, resulting in lower taxes for you.

How To Donate A Car In California

There are several things to bear in mind if you want to learn how to donate a car in California dmv without the risks. Few months ago, I have donated my car to charity and it went off without any major issues.  But I want to help kind people to ensure that their car donation will be as easy as mine.

How To Donate A Car In California dmv – Easy Tips

I have donated a car that I have been using for about five years. It is still in good condition and still drivable. However, I have learned that even old cars that are impossible to drive are still accepted by several charitable organizations as long as the parts could be sold. So, if you have old cars, don’t discard them yet to junk shops. Many charitable agencies insist that the vehicles are in good working condition however. I suggest that you select an organization that you recognize. I have selected to donate my car to a charity with national operations but has a center in California. I feel safer with this. Just be careful since there are organizations with names that sound the same.
I have noticed that there are charitable agencies that hire intermediary car donation companies to serve as brokers and to take care of the car donations. However, I think this is not a good option since the charity will normally get a small portion of the final cost of the car. The intermediary agency might keep the large percentage of the funds from the sale of the car for their overhead costs. I have chosen an organization that directly handles the donation from towing to auction.

How To Donate A Car In California? When I made my choice, I checked with the charity on how they would benefit from the donation. Some charities will use the car for their operations, some will sell the car to raise funds for humanitarian projects, and some will give the car to a needy family or individuals. For example, I have donated my pick up van to a charity that provides free transportation to poor farmers.

I had a friend who donated his car to charity only to find out that the charitable organization was just a scam. But that experience did not change my decision to donate my car. To protect myself from bogus organizations, I checked with BBB in California to verify the registration and the reputation of several organizations that I am planning to give out my car. I suggest that you stay away from charities with bad records and had any dubious transactions with car donations. Also make certain that the charity has the proper registration and has the license to operate in California. However, this is not needed if you are donating to a nationally acclaimed charity. Also check if the charity carries the tax exempt status for your tax deductions.

Long-Term Care Insurance Are Too Expensive

Long-Term Care Insurance, insurance

If you check out the prices of today's long term care insurance, I'm sure you'll ask who can afford them? They are just too expensive for the regular working class like us.

Long-term care insurance policies pay back policyholders a daily amount for services to assist them with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, transferring (to bed, chair, etc), housework, shopping for groceries or eating. Unlike traditional health insurance, long-term care insurance is designed to cover long-term services and supports, including personal and custodial care in a variety of settings such as your home, a community organization, or other facility.

In Pennsylvania, premiums have gone up as much as 130%, yearly rates have exceeded $8,000. So why are they so expensive? President of Rosenthal Wealth Management Group Larry Rosenthal said that nowadays, people are living longer and aren't necessarily living healthier. So insurance companies left the market since there are little or no profits and those that remain have increased premiums significantly to keep up with costs.

Here are some alternatives way to pay for Expensive Long-Term Care Insurance:

Short-term care insurance - this policy is like long-term care insurance, however the benefits are typically capped at one year. This policy is more affordable and they may also be available to older seniors or those who aren't otherwise eligible for long-term coverage.

Life + long-term care insurance - the combination of long-term care coverage and life insurance may help consumers avoid the type of rate increases currently being experienced in Pennsylvania.

Long-term care annuities - These annuities require a hefty upfront payment, but if you need long-term care, your overall cost may be lower than what you'd spend on insurance premiums.

Health savings accounts - For those who have an eligible high-deductible health insurance plan, a health savings account offers a way to put money aside tax-free for medical costs, such as long-term care.

Home equity - Retirees without significant investments may still own a valuable asset: their house. Tapping into home equity through a line of credit, taking out a reverse mortgage or selling a house outright are some of the ways people can use their property to pay for long-term care.

Pensions or Social Security - Depending on the size of your monthly payments and the amount of care you need, paying for services monthly out of a pension or Social Security benefit may be option.

Medicaid - if all else fail, and a person's income and assets have been depleted, the government will step in to pay for care. Medicaid won't pay for assisted living, but it will cover nursing home care and many states also pay for home health care services for eligible people.

As strong winds move across an arid landscape, sand or dirt is picked up from the ground. Sometimes the lighter dust particles can be lifted up to 20,000 feet high into the atmosphere. A classic example of this is a sand and dust storm that develops over the Sahara desert. Easterly winds may carry the dust particles across the Atlantic ocean to the Caribbean Islands or Florida. Severe sand and dust storms can obscure visibility to zero and last for days

3 - Fog

Fog is a stratus cloud on the ground. There are several types of fog. Advection fog is produced by a hortizontal motion of warm moist air over colder ground. An example of this would be a warm front moving across land with a recent snow or cold weather. Radiation fog is produced as heat from the earth surface is radiated back to space at night. A moist layer and nearly calm winds need to be present. Wind can mix in dryer air aloft, keeping the air below the saturation point. Steam fog forms when cold air moves over relatively warm water. This can be observed as wisps of "steam" rising from lakes, rivers or oceans when a cold air mass moves in. Upslope fog occurs as air is pushed up a mountainside and becomes saturated so that condensation occurs.

4 - Freezing Rain / Ice

Freezing rain - known as "ice" occurs when a thin layer of freezing or below freezing air exists near the earth's surface. Typically this occurs when snow falls into warmer air changing the precipitation into rain. If a very thin layer of freezing air is present near the ground the rain will freeze on objects such as power lines, trees, and cars. Ice accumulations begin to cause serious problems when the ice is 1/2" or greater on objects

5 - Hail

The exact processes that creates hail are still being studied. Traditionally, textbooks showed hailstones being formed as a water droplet was carried aloft with an updaft into subfreezing air and freezing. As the ice moved into a downdraft, more water coated the hailstone. The cycle continued with the hailstone continuing to grow with each ride up and down the updraft and downdraft

6 - Lightning

Lightning is simply a discharge of electricity in the atmosphere. For a complete look at this interesting phenomenon, check the facts about lightning page

7 - Rain

Rain is precipitation in liquid form. Liquid precipitation can occur as mist, drizzle, or rain. Droplet size differentiates the type that it is classified. Mist is generally 50-500 microns in size. Drizzle is .5 to 2 millimeters in size and rain is 2 millimeters to 1 centimenter in size. Rain is formed when condensation of water vapor occurs condenses into water droplets.

8 - Sleet

Sleet is transparent frozen raindrops. Sleet or ice pellets are created when snow falls into air above freezing and melts into rain drops. If another below freezing layer below the warm air is of sufficient depth, the rain drops freeze into balls of ice or ice pellets. Any significant amount of sleet is farily rare. This is due to the fact that there needs to be just the right conditons to get a perfect layer of warm air in between the layers of cold air. There have been cases of storms producing several inches of sleet. A mix of snow and sleet and sleet and rain is more common

9 - Snow

Snow is the accumulation of crystal snowflakes. Snowflakes are made as water ice crystalizes. The crystals may form in many different shapes dictated by the water content and temperature in the cloud as the snowflakes are forming. Snowflakes can take the shape of columns, dendrites, plates, needles and other six sided shapes. It is possible for it to snow several degrees above freezing if the air aloft is very cold and the above freezing layer is shallow near the ground.

10 - Sun

Sunny weather or clear skies is defined as less than 1/8 sky cloud cover. Mostly sunny skies is characterized by 1/8 - 2/8 sky cloud cover. Sunny skies many times are observed when a high pressure area is dominating the weather pattern. High pressure signifies a region of sinking air which tends to dry out the atmosphere resulting in less mositure to form clouds. Deserts are locations with sunny or mostly sunny skies due to high pressure systems influencing the weather pattern much of the year.

Mesothelioma Law Firm

For decades, mesothelioma, a life-threatening disease that can affect the lungs, abdomen, and several other major organs, has been linked to prolonged exposure to asbestos, resulting in numerous people seeking a law firm specializing in mesothelioma to help them cover the overwhelming expenses associated with the disease.Typically, mesothelioma victims were exposed to asbestos while working at a job site that used asbestos-containing materials (ACMs). In many cases, the manufacturers of asbestos and ACMs knew of the hidden dangers and risks of asbestos, yet failed to inform the public, as asbestos was an extremely profitable mineral. Because of the hinderance of information, workers who developed health issues from asbestos exposure may be eligible for financial compensation to cover expenses such as lost wages, medical bills, emotional suffering, physical pain, and more.

If you suffer from mesothelioma or asbestos-related lung cancer, you may be eligible for a large amount of compensation. Currently, there is over $30 billion in asbestos trust funds, set up for those who have been diagnosed with an asbestos-related illness. Use our free Asbestos Attorney Locator Tool to find a top mesothelioma attorney in your area.

What to Look for When Hiring an Asbestos Law Firm

  • The law firm should have experience in dealing with mesothelioma cases.
  • The law firm should be extremely knowledgeable in asbestos laws and prior cases.
  • Look for a law firm that focuses solely on asbestos-related cases.
  • Look for law firms with a stellar reputation in handling asbestos cases.
  • The law firm should not only understand asbestos laws, but should also have extensive knowledge of medical problems associated with asbestos diseases.
  • The law firm should always keep you updated on what’s going on in your case. Although attorneys are busy people, they should be accessible.
  • You should always get an initial consultation at no charge before deciding on a firm.

How a Mesothelioma Law Firm Can Personally Help You

  • Evidence Related to Your Exposure
  • If You Truly Have an Asbestos Claim
  • Your Case Worth
  • Who Exactly is Responsible

Law Firm Fees

Law firms may have different fees as well as different payment options. However, an experienced and caring law firm understands that victims of asbestos-related diseases more than likely have enough financial burden in dealing with their illness, and are unable to afford up-front fees for legal representation. As a result, many firms work on what’s known as a contingency fee basis, meaning that they only get paid when you get paid.

BENEFITS OF CLOUD COMPUTING

Cloud computing offers your business many benefits. It allows you to set up what is essentially a virtual office to give you the flexibility of connecting to your business anywhere, any time. With the growing number of web-enabled devices used in today's business environment, access to your data is even easier. There are many benefits to moving your business to the cloud:

Cloud Computing was built for growth.
Let’s say you need 10 times the number of computer systems you currently have, what do you do? Cloud computing is one of the best ways to accommodate such growth. By simply providing the required systems over a virtual network, instead of a physical platform, companies can provide the software and tools to an unlimited number of employees, as they need them.

Need more features?
Just add them on! Another reason cloud computing has gained momentum is because it is minimalizing additional costs by making computers, including servers and desktop machines, become simple features. The only thing a company needs to do to add on new features is login and add them. It’s as simple as that!

Cloud Computing facilitates new ideas.
Due to the immense flexibility and customization that the cloud offers, new ideas and systems can be born. This is especially beneficial when a company has a unique system or company structure to support. Along these same lines, the cloud offers automatic software integration which will make customization even easier.

Want more control over your company’s systems?
The cloud can offer this, too. With all of your employees data on file and easily accessible, key players can access files and other important data from one central location. This ability has many benefits, including security when an employee goes a-wall.

Why buy when you can rent?
One of the greatest benefits of cloud computing technology is that companies don’t need to pay for expensive hardware and software. Instead, they can pay only for what they need and will use. This pay as you use platform has attracted many organizations to adopt cloud computing technology.

Want enough storage to last you a life time?
The cloud can deliver! If there is one thing you can get with the cloud it’s a lot of storage. And again, you only pay for what you use. When you’re talking about large scale use, wasted storage space can be a huge expense and the cloud can offer a better way of near endless storage.

Backup and recovery
While you can store your data on physical machines, the cloud offers another secure method for backup. Additionally, most cloud service providers can also provide you with adequate data recovery to make the entire process much simpler.

BENEFITS OF CLOUD COMPUTING

Reduced IT costs
Moving to cloud computing may reduce the cost of managing and maintaining your IT systems. Rather than purchasing expensive systems and equipment for your business, you can reduce your costs by using the resources of your cloud computing service provider. You may be able to reduce your operating costs because:
  • the cost of system upgrades, new hardware and software may be included in your contract
  • you no longer need to pay wages for expert staff
  • your energy consumption costs may be reduced
  • there are fewer time delays.
Scalability
Your business can scale up or scale down your operation and storage needs quickly to suit your situation, allowing flexibility as your needs change. Rather than purchasing and installing expensive upgrades yourself, your cloud computer service provider can handle this for you. Using the cloud frees up your time so you can get on with running your business.

Business continuity
Protecting your data and systems is an important part of business continuity planning. Whether you experience a natural disaster, power failure or other crisis, having your data stored in the cloud ensures it is backed up and protected in a secure and safe location. Being able to access your data again quickly allows you to conduct business as usual, minimising any downtime and loss of productivity.

Collaboration efficiency
Collaboration in a cloud environment gives your business the ability to communicate and share more easily outside of the traditional methods. If you are working on a project across different locations, you could use cloud computing to give employees, contractors and third parties access to the same files. You could also choose a cloud computing model that makes it easy for you to share your records with your advisers (e.g. a quick and secure way to share accounting records with your accountant or financial adviser).

Flexibility of work practices
Cloud computing allows employees to be more flexible in their work practices. For example, you have the ability to access data from home, on holiday, or via the commute to and from work (providing you have an internet connection). If you need access to your data while you are off-site, you can connect to your virtual office, quickly and easily.

Access to automatic updates
Access to automatic updates for your IT requirements may be included in your service fee. Depending on your cloud computing service provider, your system will regularly be updated with the latest technology. This could include up-to-date versions of software, as well as upgrades to servers and computer processing power.

How Can Manage an MBA While Working?

You work full time. You're constantly on the road for business. You want to make sure you have plenty of time for family, friends and fun. Wondering how in the world you can fit an MBA into your life?
How Can Manage an MBA While Working?
First, it's important to realize that an online MBA requires the same time commitment as a traditional MBA - the course structure and work load are very similar. But the big difference is, with online study, you have much more flexibility to control your study time, and you don’t need to give up your job to do it. The opportunity cost of earning your degree is minimized.

How much time does it take?
I am currently a student enrolled in the Jack Welch MBA program, which recommends allowing 15-20 hours of study time per week per course. It also varies depending on the course. As a marketing professional, I find the Global Marketing course is a breeze. When I decided to use my final assignment to build a marketing plan for my client, the assignment doubled as my professional work and allowed me to write a very high quality proposal. On the other hand, I spend more time and effort in finance related courses, a subject that I have less experience in.

Time requirements also vary depending on the week. Most courses have three assignments -- in weeks 3, 6 and 10 -- during the 10-week period, but other courses require five assignments every other week. I usually spread out the time to write the assignments so my weeks are balanced.

How can you find time to study?
Have you ever wondered why some people seem to get so much more done than others? Have you also noticed that you always find time to do the things you really want? The rule is that if you want something badly enough, you will find time to do it.

During our online and offline networking sessions with students, the topic of time management always comes up. So I want to share a few quick “secrets” on how students with different lifestyles manage their time:
  • Early birds. These students rise in the early morning, usually around 5 am, and study for 2-3 hours before going to work. My inspirational friend Heidi Boyd gets hours of work done before most people get up. Some students choose to beat the traffic and arrive at the office early to study for a couple of hours before everyone else shows up. An early bird approach can help you sneak in 10-15 hours a week for study before you even start work.
  • Night owls. This is me and many others. My kids go to bed at 8:30pm, so between 8:30 and 11:30pm, I have 3 solid hours to work on my MBA. I can easily get 15 hours of work done a week during this pocket of time.
  • Hummingbirds. These students are ready for action both early and late, finding blocks of time in between. My genius classmate Brian Flach writes his class discussion posts during lunch time. This allows him to get at least 5 hours a week of coursework done without sacrificing mornings or evenings.
  • Weekenders. Most of us have control over the weekend. I study anywhere between 4 to 12 hours depending on whether it is assignment week or not, but I always try to balance out the weekend by spending quality time with family and friends.
  • Road warriors. For those who travel a lot, like my classmates and fellow student advisory board members Kathleen Thompson and Andy Fraser, loading textbooks onto an iPad or Kindle is a must. They also read or write while waiting at the airport or in flight, accomplishing 5-10 hours of MBA study a week, no matter where in the world they are. Both Kathleen and Andy are high achievers at work and have earned big promotions since starting the Jack Welch MBA program.
Through these strategies, you can quickly surface 20-30 hours of study time even during a busy week. Of course, you will have to miss a lot TV, but I can tell you living without TV is a very liberating experience. I have to watch TV for work, but I limit that time to a minimum.

On improving efficiency at work
One more bonus point on how to improve productivity. In their best-selling book “The One Thing”, authors Gary Keller and Jay Papasan reveal how multitasking at work slows things down. On the low end, we lose 28% of our work day by frantically switching among work, emails and phone calls -- that's more than a day per week. With more singular focus, you can better manage your time at work, and net one bonus day every week. And that's really all the time you need to fit in your MBA.

How to set up your iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus

Now that you've picked up your very own iPhone 6s or 6s Plus, here's "How to set up your iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus".
How to set up your iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus
Whether you've gotten your new iPhone from an Apple Store, other retail store, or shipped to your home, once you unbox it you'll need to set it up in order to start having fun with your new device. So we've put together a step-by-step guide to get you going.

1. Should I set up from scratch or restore?

You have three choices during setup: Start from scratch, restore from an iCloud or iTunes backup of a previous iPhone, or use the Move to iOS app to restore your information from an Android device.

When to start from scratch

There are a couple of reasons you might want to have a fresh install on your new iPhone. Those who have never owned a smartphone before are the chief beneficiaries of this install process they have no data to restore from, after all but starting from scratch can be useful elsewhere, too.

For example, when you buy an iPhone from the Apple Store, you're given the option to set it up with a Specialist before you leave. Even if you have a backup waiting at home, if you really want to play with your new iPhone ASAP (or you want to make sure you can receive phone calls until you get home), you should absolutely set up your new device from scratch. Logging into iCloud during that fresh install will ensure you still have access to your address book, Messages, and passwords, but you won't have to wait for a full iCloud restore before you can access core features.

When you get back home, just go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings, then set up your iPhone again from your backup of choice.

The other group I recommend starting from scratch to are the ones who want what's called a "clean install" they may have a backup, but they want to reinstall all their apps and system settings because they feel their device has gotten slow or full of excess cruft. Because, as I mentioned above, your iCloud account syncs most of your vital information, you don't really need to restore from a bonafide backup with a few exceptions:

  • Health data requires an encrypted iTunes backup or iCloud backup before it can be restored to a new device.
  • Apple Watch data is kept in an iPhone's backup.

When to restore from an iPhone backup or Android's Move to iOS

If you want to keep data that your iCloud doesn't sync or you want to move text messages and the like over from your Android phone, you'll want to stick with restoring from a backup.

If you purchased your phone at an Apple Store, you're given the option to set up while you're there: And if you're doing something complicated switching from another platform, for example, or a feature phone it might be helpful to have someone walk you through the ropes. But if you have an iCloud backup or an iTunes backup of a previous iPhone, it's better to set it up at home.

For one thing, if you have an iCloud backup, you won't be relying on the Apple Store's already strained Wi-Fi network to restore and once you start restoring, you have to stay there until it finishes. (That can sometimes take up to an hour and unless you love hanging out in an Apple Store for an hour...) iTunes backups also generally make more sense to restore when you get home, as they require your computer.

2. Start the setup process

When you turn on your new iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, you'll be greeted with a Lock screen that simply says "Hello" in many different languages. After your iPhone or iPad powers on, you'll see a welcome screen. Slide your finger across the bottom where it says slide to set up, then choose your language and country or region.

From here, you'll need to choose a Wi-Fi network and enter its password, if necessary; if you don't have access to Wi-Fi or no networks are found, you can choose Use Cellular instead.

From here, your iPhone should activate. If it doesn't and you receive an error, be sure you have a valid SIM card installed.

After activation, you're brought to the Location Services screen, where you can choose whether you'd like to have location services on by default. Make sure you read the description of what location services are before deciding whether or not you'd like to enable or disable them. (Keep in mind that certain apps like Maps need location services enabled to operate properly.)

From here, you'll want to set up your Touch ID fingerprint and a passcode. (You can skip this step by selecting Set Up Touch ID Later).

On the next screen, you're given the option to set up as a new device, restore from iCloud, restore from iTunes, or restore from Android.

To set up as new, tap on Set up as New iPhone and continue reading.

From here, you can choose to either sign in with an existing iCloud Apple ID or create a new, free one. Note: If you use two separate IDs for iCloud and iTunes, you can choose that option here under the login screen by tapping on Use different Apple IDs for iCloud and iTunes.

If you don't want to do either right now, or you don't have an Apple ID yet, you can tap on Skip This Step. (You can always go back and create one or sign in from the Settings app at any time.)

Agree to Apple's Terms and Conditions on the next screen. The following screen will ask you to confirm that you agree one more time.

After doing so, you'll be asked to set up Apple Pay, Apple's Touch ID-based payment option; iCloud Keychain, which stores and syncs your passwords across all your devices; and Siri, Apple's voice-activated assistant.

You'll also be asked if you want to use "Hey Siri," which lets you automatically trigger Siri with the aforementioned catchphrase; if you do, your phone will walk you through calibrating Siri to your voice.

Finally, you'll be prompted about automatically sending anonymous diagnostics to Apple when apps crash or are otherwise sluggish, to better improve the system. If you'd rather not, just tap Don't Send. You'll also be offered the option to turn on Display Zoom, which makes apps and text a bit bigger to fill in the larger screen.

And with that, you're done with the initial setup process! (Though we recommend going through the Settings app to further tweak your iPhone to your liking.

3. Restore from an iCloud backup

If you use Apple's online service, iCloud, to back up your iPhone, then you can transfer all your data from your old device to your new one wirelessly. Depending on when your last backup was, however, you might want to manually trigger a backup before making the transfer. This ensures that everything is as up-to-date as possible.

How to back up your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  • First, follow the instructions in step 1. After selecting Restore from iCloud backup, sign into your iCloud account. (Your Apple ID.)
  • Tap Next.
  • Agree to the Terms and Conditions and Confirm.
  • Choose your recent backup from the list.
  • Enter your iCloud password when and if requested.

Depending on how much data you have to download, including music and apps, it might take a while for the transfer to complete. Your iPhone might feel warm for a while, due to the radios working and the Spotlight search system indexing. Stay on Wi-Fi as much as possible so that you can speed up the process.

4. Restore from an iTunes backup

If you use iTunes to back up your iPhone, you can transfer data to your new one using your USB to Lightning cable. Again, depending on when your last backup was, you might want to manually trigger a backup before making a transfer. That'll ensure everything is as up-to-date as possible.

How to back up your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  • First, follow the instructions in step 1. After selecting Restore from iTunes backup, connect your new iPhone to your computer and open iTunes on your Mac or Windows PC.
  • Select Restore from this backup.
  • Choose your recent backup from the list.
  • Enter your password if your backup was encrypted (recommended if you want to restore Health.app data).

Depending on how much data you have to download, including music and apps, it might take a while for the transfer to complete. Your iPhone might feel warm for a while, due to its radios working and the Spotlight search system indexing.

Keep your iPhone plugged into iTunes until the transfer is complete.
